Where will your funeral be? Just for now, we’ll set aside the fact that most of us don’t discuss this with our nearest and dearest (even though it would be rather helpful if we did), and focus instead on the choices.
First question
is ‘where’? If you have a strong faith, then a religious building will be the
obvious choice. Religious buildings are evocative spaces; often ancient, places
that have seen all the joy and sadness of life acted out over generations.
Simply entering a church is a ritual act, as you leave the hustle and bustle of
life behind and move into a sacred space.
But today,
people are more secular, or are spiritual without a formal religion. A church may
no longer feel appropriate. Did you know that you can hold a funeral ceremony
with the coffin present anywhere that will agree to have it? There is no
licence required, no official permission to be sought. So why not think about hotels,
a garden (doesn’t have to be your own if you have a friend with a suitable
space), riverside or woodland setting for the ceremony.
With nature all around, the scent
of flowers in the air and a sense of peace as you are not rushing against the
clock, it is possible to create a very moving and memorable ceremony. Village
halls are often attractive buildings; yurts and marquees too can be incredibly
effective in creating a beautiful space and can be arranged at short notice.
Personally, I’m
inspired by nature and the natural elements and seasons, so the thought of an outdoor
ceremony in the sunshine (not sure how I will plan that in this country!), with
the flowers in full bloom and birds singing sounds idyllic! If this is the type of ceremony you
would like, do please get in touch.
Today I am
mostly thinking that I should share my own funeral plans with you in a blog –
watch this space!
